A fancy new shopping centre has recently opened in Phnom Penh, the Aeon Mall. Built with international investment, it is glitzy, sparkly, and full of the latest high street shops and restaurants and boasts a plush cinema, arcade and bowling alley. We spent a day there shopping, eating and trying to figure out how not to get sprayed with water by the bum washing toilet seats! Once inside the mall you could be in any major city in the world, clean lines, bright lights and big names are on every floor. However once you step outside the mall, the contrast in development in Phnom Penh really hits home. The piles of rubbish and blocks of slums that sit just outside the boundary of the mall are unfortunately a more realistic image of the Cambodian capital than the designer stores found within.
